Self-Forgiveness: The Pinnacle of Self-Care

Forgiveness is a powerful tool that sets us free from the shackles of guilt, shame, and regret. Yet, we often forget to extend this grace to ourselves. Self-forgiveness is the pinnacle of self-care, allowing us to release the burden of self-criticism and embrace our imperfections.

By practicing self-forgiveness, we learn to:

- Embrace our humanity and acknowledge that mistakes are an inevitable part of growth

- Treat ourselves with the same kindness and compassion we offer to others

- Let go of the need for perfection and embrace our quirks and flaws

- Cultivate self-awareness and recognize areas for improvement

- Develop a growth mindset and see challenges as opportunities for growth

- Practice self-compassion and speak to ourselves with gentle kindness

- Release the weight of self-criticism and step into the freedom of self-acceptance

Remember, tomorrow is a new day to do things better. Don't be too hard on yourself. Take care of yourself, and start by forgiving yourself. You are worthy of love, kindness, and compassion – from yourself, most of all.

Endurance

Nigeria
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mutual harmony and respect are essential elements for a world at peace. This poem illustrates the great peace in the anterior post of the alimentary canal despite a great zeal of misunderstanding going on in there always.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENDURANCE

Listen to this,
“The mouth is a home
Tongue and teeth it keeps.
Many atimes,
The teeth bite the tongue
But it wouldn’t kink,
Many atimes,
The tongue hit the teeth
Yet it wouldn’t break.”
Over the years
They’ve always lived in peace,
Their recipe for harmony

“Endurance”, they say it is.

River of World

Once upon a morning, I strolled to the river side to enjoy it's tranquility and sight of beauty and loveliness. Just as the birth of a child bring joy to every eye in the family, so also is the dawn of the morning. It seems to spread joy on the riverside. On the bank of the river there were several boats lying at rest. A boatman stood by one, eagerly awaiting passengers. In the middle of the river, there were many others with countless fishermen and boatmen who had an early start at the day's work.
Looking at those boats, I thought in my mind. "Man is a boat sailing from the bank of birth, across the river of world to the other bank; the bank of death". It is true we are all born equals but we are not all equals. While some lead, others follow. Howbeit, we shall all pay the ultimate price of death. But some shall die and stay dead like heavy precipitates. Others shall die and live forever; in thoughts, speeches and blessed memories. Lives of great men reminds us that we can make our lives sublime, we can die and leave behind us foot prints on the sand of time; boats on the bank of death.
Behold! I looked across the river and saw on the other bank only a few boats, most of which were small. The "mighty" had capsized under the sway of the turbulent river. If the river had been calm all through, it would have led to nowhere - it is not a pond. While they crossed the river of world, most times the river was turbulent, at times calm. Only the upright boats get to the other bank. Only the wise fishermen get there with a catch. The foolish ones greedily filled their boats with catch and sink halfway. Some others get there without a catch; many more just abandon the voyage and accept defeat.
The river of world is tasteless and calm for those who have taken the navigable part - the path of peace. It is turbulent and salty for those who try to find a short cut in violence and war. It is not how fast but how well. Some boats start early but end with no catch; some take their time and exercise wisdom. They start late and end well, with a big catch.

Funtua to Gusau

Nigeria
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A traveler’s window report of the socio-political landscape from Funtua to Gusau.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Funtua to Gusau

From horizon to horizon
Carpets of Masara, dusts of rice
Spots of high baobab compete with pylon.
Shades of green blend within the rise
Na gode Allah for the rains.

Twin baobabs pity others fallen and grey.
Time for rally; donkeys’ parade, cattle’s graze
Kids on camels, kings in Lexus – sharia tray.
Sai Aso rock! They screech … “we can’t see
Goats tied to sticks on streets,” they say!

Illegal mining in near distant hills,
White stones and shiny diggers blaze
Drop your googles, site the fields
Ba theory, Ba Malomo da 34 minerals craze:
Map the majors, sell them … leave fringes.

Human tractors sow with heels,
Sai yoked oxen weeding (grazing) non-rest.
Women in boulders weave up cane reels.
Sai technology at her primitive best.

Who’s provoking heroes in future graves!

Setting Long Range Business Goals

Goal setting is a vital element for sustaining any business. The ability to set and achieve short term goals would ensure businesses continue to deliver value on daily basis, by extension keep up with operation demands or expenses, whilst the ability to set, work towards achieving, achieve or surpass long term goals would allow for the organization to maintain its going concern.

Consequently, it is imperative for business leaders to understand how to set long term goals; below is a simplified guide in 10 steps.

1. Ask and answer the following questions:
  • What does the company intend to achieve in the next 10 years?
  • What must the company do to achieve these landmarks?
  • Where must the company be positioned, situated or made strategically visible to enable progress?
  • What assets - human capital and factors of production, must the company acquire to attain desired next levels?
  • How does the company intend to give back to immediate and remote environment as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)?

2. Attempt to answer each question using numbered bullet points on a separate piece of paper. You may want to engage all the leaders in the company during a strategy meeting in order to harness valuable stakeholder’s inputs for long range goal setting. Ensure there are about 20 to 50 distinct answers for each question.
3. Ascribe realistic timelines in years (1, 2 3, 4 ...) to each of the suggested answers, possibly as superscripts.
4. Reshuffle each list to show balance in goal setting for each year - year 1, 2 , 3 , 4 ... possibly to year 10.
5. Prioritize the listed goals derived from each question - this is a critical step in this task. Recall about 50 answers were collated per question; there would be a need to rank possible options in order of feasibility and priority.
6. Write short reasoning/descriptive essays on each of the top 10 priority items; give reasons for wanting each. If you are unable to muscle good reasons for any item, strike it off the list!
7. Select 4 top priorities from each category to have 20 long range goals or focus areas.
8. Compile these 20 goals in a long term goal journal or company’s 5-year or 10-year plan document as the case maybe.
9. Review the selected goals on weekly basis, feel free to strike out those accomplished or those that are no longer relevant or value adding in line with realistic operational / business environment.
10. Engage your Financial Advisor as part of weekly reviews; ultimately well planned goals should positively impact both the company's corporate existence/image and financial bottom-line.

Idleness

Idleness;
A business on it’s own.
Nothing is being done
Thousand things in thought,
Yet the brain isn’t dumb.

Ideas trip in one after one,
*Idleness and inaction are risky compliments.
But none is deemed fit
Till considerable time is gone.
Before the brain will tilt
And something next be done

In the “hurry – hurry” way.
Since the time meant for it
Was used to bow the head,
Chin placed on palm
While the brain travels far beyond
To get the next job on plan.

Even this poem you read,

Idleness made it to be.

A brevis descriptive poem from the Mambilla Complex series.

Tepe Ferry Point

One log makes a canoe.
Two planks a bridge on steep slopes.
Three planks make a ferry row-row.
Four planks a ferry with hollow.

Five planks ferry a lorry slowly.

Why do boreholes collapse in Lagos

Borehole failure can be described as the instability of subsurface strata due to inadequate compaction and inability of the bored well to perform up to its installed capacities.
This is due to
1 Low quantity of cement materials (clay) and inadequate compaction
2 High hydraulic conductivity of the concerned  loose layer
3 Vibration of the ground from adjacent vibrating source.
4 Excessive withdrawal from adjacent well.
5 Wrong screening of the pipe and use fake water pump etc
NOTE: This is also applicable to basement complex areas like Ibadan , Ilorin, Akure, Ondo etc

Why do you need geophysical survey before drilling a borehole

Although one can come across water at any depth in a sedimentary environment like Lagos (the reason for so many “successful” shabbily executed shallow holes in Lagos) however there is more to borehole drilling and construction than just locating the depth to water table.
Geophysical exploration helps in locating region of abnormal water potential (high hydraulic conductivities) hence give information about the subsurface region that is prone to possible collapse. It helps to demarcate fresh water and salt water boundary especially in places close to the coastal region of Lagos (Lekki and environ). It particularly differentiates between regional water table (main aquifer) from perched or local water level which are usually polluted and inadequate for prolong use. Etc

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS
1. Contact, consult and/or contract only experts in the field from project conception to execution.
2. Have a clear and deep understanding of the geology of the area (your site) before developing a site plan or erecting permanent structures (ensure your soak away is not sited on the best and only aquifer with your site or neighbourhood).
3. Carry out detailed geophysical appraisal of the proposed site to reduce future wastages and ensure   engineering and architectural best practices.
4. Use well formulated drilling mud during construction of borehole to prevent failure.
5. Insist on having a project report with drillers/well log for convenient and smart borehole maintenance.
6. Beware of quack Doodle buggers or ensure you have a maintenance commitment/agreement if you must use one.

From Pinging to Communicating

I have always grown up with strong affinity for social networking ... long before they were called "social media". From the good old days of post cards (early 80s), through stamp collection and snail mails to pen friendship and penpal clubs. After then came emails, collaborative computing and chat engines (yahoo, hotmail, etc). With every new innovative communication tool comes an adventurous instinct in me - I gladly test them and then, deploy them in advancing my networking skills with the aim of achieving sales/service level targets on the job.

I like to write and chat, using the powers of letter writing, internet and other communication tools, I have been able to transform these hobbies into advantageous skills over the years. As a field technical sales officer, I briefed my clients and prospective business partners through chat engines, closed deals before hitting the streets for mere hardware configurations - no talking is required. As an equity research and investment banker, I used chat windows as medium for offering investment advisory services to"total strangers", closed more deals than conventional sales team did. The power of "chats" or "pings" as we now know it with the advent of personal mobile devices/computers (like blackberry, androids, tablets) seem very effective until the clients insist on having the salesman pick up the cheques in person.

Then comes the challenge "pinging" poses ... a smart, articulate and persuasive writer is not necessarily and articulate speech maker or competent communicator. Prolonged and intense oral inactivity, often associated with chat addicts, comes with some strong disadvantages - notable is poor diction. Despite all my good exploits behind the chat engines, like a man behind a mask, I always found physically meetings and oral discussions very challenging. There became an urgent need to move away from Pinging to Communicating as more clients insist on meeting the "boss".

The need to be look at my clients in the eye, marshal my intelligent presentations with the right diction, pronunciation and gesticulation; the need to put some real emotions and voice musicality behind the stimulating calculations and technical presentations I once preferred to ping at clients  ... these were a few of the challenges I had to resolve. I found them very daunting until I stumbled on Garden City Toastmasters Club. Subsequently, with every meeting, I have practice and learn how to relate very well beyond chats and pings, thus progressing towards achieving competency in real communication - moving from Pinging to Communication.

Psychology in Action

Psychology is both an academic and applied discipline involving the scientific study of mental processes and behavior. Psychologists study such phenomena as perception, cognition, emotion, personality, behavior, and interpersonal relationships. Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including issues related to daily life—e.g. family, education, and work—and the treatment of mental health problems.*

Psychology is one of the behavioral sciences—a broad field that spans the social and natural sciences. Psychology attempts to understand the role human behavior plays in social dynamics while incorporating physiological and neurological processes into its conceptions of mental functioning. Psychology includes many sub-fields of study and application concerned with such areas as human development, sports, health, industry, law, and spirituality.

The broad scope of application of discipline makes it possible for a psychology to comfortably fit into various sector of the economy, industry and programmes designed for national development. Every industrial endeavour requires human inputs and consequently psychologists so as to harness required human capital optimally. Industrial psychologists also design and promote corporate branding and policies. Psychologists are also relevant in market research, client management and product development in several sectors of the economy.

Psychologists are also highly valued in social security and military/paramilitary service since psychology is one of the pillars of criminology. Meaningful national development policies are also being designed based on technical and opinionated inputs from psychologists particularly as it concerns issues like prison reforms, youth development, sports, culture, tourism and media/public perception of government programmes, among many others. The practice of law has also benefited from contributions of psychologists in most civil and criminal cases, particularly those in which insanity is pleaded.

The tripartite relationship between law, psychology and medicine has persisted for decades with psychologists playing more leading roles in recent times. Psychologists have had fledging career in psychiatry and have resolved so many issues that complement the practice of both medicine and philosophy. Findings by psychologists in the past have been proven to promote changes in socio-cultural activities. Hence arts and culture, through the inter play of psychology and philosophy, have benefited from psychology as it is reflected in the story line of recent home videos. Subsequently more psychologists are gaining employment in the industry hitherto perceived to be exclusive to artistes.

It is expected that in no distant future, the nation would develop to such an extent where the relevance of psychology in science and technology would develop beyond human capital development or product introduction/re-engineering to such levels that would enhance innovation, development and transfer of technology as it is obtainable in America, Asia and most European nations.

Penny Stock Investment

Penny Stock investment is an investment strategy based on strategic purchase of low price stocks with high growth potential. The investment objective is to hold the investment in the long-term (3 - 5 years or more) in order to capitalize on price appreciation and dividend yield in future. In the context of the Nigeria market, penny stocks are stocks trading between 50kobo and N5.00.

Benefit of Penny Stock investment includes relatively cheaper acquisition cost, opportunity to buy large volumes of stocks and investment in a stock with upside growth potential. It is a very good investment strategy for youthful/beginner/small scale investors; however Penny Stock investors must base their stock picks on sound judgment/fundamental analysis (which is often times scarce as most research firms do not cover penny stocks in their analysis) in a bit to mitigate against inherent risks.

A major demerit of penny stock investment is the effect of inflation on invested capital as a spike in inflationary trend may adversely impact the invested capital if there is no commensurate appreciation in stock price and/or dividend yield.

Lessons for "My Pikin" Manufacturers

Chinese dairy firms involved in the tainted milk scandal are to compensate the families of the nearly 300,000 affected children, state media said. Twenty-two companies will make an undisclosed one-off cash payment to the families; Xinhua reported quoting the China Dairy Industry Association. It comes as the first defendants from the food industry went on trial accused of making and selling melamine. The industrial chemical was added to milk to make it appear high in protein. “The enterprises offered to shoulder the compensation liability. By doing so, they hope to earn understanding and forgiveness of the families of the sickened children,” Xinhua cited the Chinese dairy association as saying. The firms have also agreed to create a fund to cover the medical bills for any potential after-effects of the poisoning, it said. P20081229pg28

Would it not be reasonable and fair to ensure that the manufacturer of "My Pikin" deadly teething mixture is made to pay for damages resulting from adulterated batch. Taking a cue from China!

Return of Naira Merchants

Saturday 3rd July is the day. Ketu garage is the spot. The journey from Akoka to Ketu was hurriedly taken; devoid of stop-overs and street trading – when you are late you are late, there is no need window shopping for a bribe to appease those waiting for your belated arrival. As I hurry to catch a bus heading for Ijebu Igbo, I was overwhelmed by the thought of how (un)smooth or rough the journey would be (for certain, the stretch named OGD Boulevard across Ilishan is going to be rough).
However, in the depth of my thoughts, one distraction caught my fancy. As much as I tried, I could not resist writing about it. The naira merchants are back at work. Until now, one had thought the Charles Soludo administration as Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor had tactically eradicated the bad idea of selling mint naira notes on the streets by changing all easily tattered  low naira denominations to polymer notes and making them widely available to the citizenry through the banks among other strict regulatory and policy measures.
The contrary now seem the case as the polymer notes are now up for sale – attracting higher premium than old mint paper notes. After all, we were told polymer notes are more expensive to produce and designed to last longer. Seated comfortably at the garage were two middle aged women with big bags stuffed with new polymer notes. Obviously and strangely so, there are displayed for sale. I helplessly watched as co-travellers buy some to be “sprayed” in parties.
Ten minutes later, the writer in me overcame the patriotic me. I ordered for one thousand naira worth of twenty naira notes. In a jiffy, I had my order but at a cost. The naira merchants demanded for two hundred naira (twenty percent) premium on one thousand naira transaction! It used to be one hundred naira premium per thousand. This “Öwambe craze” is costly – but I have no choice but to console myself.
My granny likes new notes; she would have these as gift to offer to others. Sadly, she need not know handsomely I’ve paid to disobey the law – a career writer would have returned the notes (feigning unsatisfactory bargain). For me, that idea crossed my mind much later as I galloped up and down on Gbenga Daniel Boulevard far away in Ogun State.

Who Should Pay For Dinner Dates?

Who Should Pay For Dinner Dates? The Man Or The Woman?

There is this debate that we all like to avoid, but it stares us in the eye at almost every outing – especially if one is (un)lucky enough to be dating a richer partner. The question “Who should pay for dinner dates?’ is a familiar evil that has broken several relationships and threatens many marriages. How do we view it as individuals, couples or groups?

In my opinion, the man should pay for dinner dates, not as a rule but as a sign of living up to ones responsibility in the context of cultural and sociological perspectives of human living in this part of the world. The African man has a measure of pride attached to making his lady comfortable, toiling for her, making her happy, protecting her and doing all sorts that increases her level of comfort from building of traditional huts for her in time past to opening the car door for the lady in modern times.

Moreover, it is almost generally accepted worldwide (except in the West where honour has been thrown to the dust bins!) that wooing the opposite sex is the man's responsibilities and dinner dates are preludes to an established relationship and necessary impetus to sustain the excitement in any existing relationship. The man should seize the opportunity of a dinner date to appreciate his partner or girl friend, he should endeavour within the limits of his purse, to thrill his partner at every dinner date. He should allow the lady to pick her choice on the eatery menu. If they have already established good rapport he could let her know the limits of his purse such that the cost of such dinner dates does not unnecessarily affect other bills.

However, the act of buying so much for a lady at any dinner date at the expense of ones budget for other issues and items like family upkeep, school fees, telephone bills and others is not ideal. It is a measure of financial immaturity and a display of misplaced priority. Moreover, some men are fond of buying stuffs they haven’t tasted in a life time and cannot afford to take at dinner dates just to impress a newly found love (she eats while the mope at her, trying to curtail their displeasure at not being able to afford the delight in duplicates); this is mere deceit.

It is also not always compulsory that a dinner that should cost a fortune especially in the light of weak national economy. With mutual understanding among couples, a dinner date could often times be as cheap as convenient for the financial standard of both the man and the lady, without necessarily diminishing the quality of the fun achievable. This essential state of understanding, which is very compulsory for partners who have envisaged, marrying one another, could put to rest the argument as to whether it is a man or a woman that is to pay for any dinner date.

Another important factor, especially for already married couples, is the allocation of social responsibilities based on mutual understanding or marriage contract. Often, it is the responsibility of the man to stock the house with foodstuffs while the lady does the cooking; however in rare case the lady might have accepted to cater for the kitchen independently while the man’s pay packet is used for capital projects like building houses. In such homes, it is common to see the lady paying for dinner dates – often she suggests it especially if she is not prepared to do kitchen chores at that moment.

Finally, there is no crime in a lady paying for dinner dates. It is however criminal for a man to expect a lady to pay for dinner dates. Although, from experience, one must have observed that most disciplined ladies do not allow a man to pay their bills on the first date. Rarely, a lady may also decide to threat his man to a dinner date, men do not need to feel too pompous to accept this offer, just reciprocate it in hundred folds shortly afterwards!

Maza Maza

Nigeria
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quick story of Lagos Area boys depicting unrestrained terrorism on site workers, terror unlimited, is the wage worth the risk?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MAZA MAZA

Lagos to ECOWAS trade corridor
Goes double, preface site horror:
From Coker – Mile 2 – Badagry way
Urchins clash over paltry pay.

Who’ll dare the Governors’ boys?
Or barter his life for common coins.
At every point we go we “settle”…
Quickly, unsteady; thus goes the battle.

At Maza Maza,
Work retrogresses in stanzas:
Kola results to distress at noon.
Landlords with arms oppress in open.

Everyone takes cover,
Policemen reverse in rover,
Drilling is far from over … our rods,
Casing and samples litter … Jesus!

Deafening screams as bullets fly,
Bravery marks on swollen lips for mercy cry,
What a story for such a ransom.

Thank God for Grace in the storms.

Ideas Rule the World

An idea is a concept or abstraction formed and existing in the mind. Human capability to contemplate ideas is associated with the ability of reasoning, self-reflection, and the ability to acquire and apply intellect. Further, ideas give rise to actual concepts, or mind generalizations, which are the basis for any kind of knowledge whether science or philosophy. From the above understanding of what ideas entail, it is obvious that every fabric of the group, family, societal, national, regional and global interactions commenced first from the concepts of ideas and ends around such. The entirely world is governed by ideas originating from the best of intellectuals who best use multidisciplinary approach in resolving complex issues that daily affect our co-existence on earth. Reasoning and self reflection are the strongest elements of invention and by extension civilization cum globalization. Starting from the early stages of civilization when the Platos, Aristotles, Galileos among others formulated hypothesis, principles and theories to the present day of high power policy framework, charters, conventions and protocols; man has only learnt to build on the early man’s lay models using newly available technologies and media courtesy “ideas”. From “scavenger” agriculture to mechanization and genetic modifications; from scouting oasis in the deserts to making oasis of deserts, from “telescope astrology” to International Space Station; from pockets of clans to a structured world governance system (United Nations); man has employed ideas across several disciplines to govern the world. Ideas have been used to unite, produce, co-ordinate and articulate several programmes for development of humanity so much so that the world is no longer seen as a geographical landmass but a global village where every barrier to human and material interaction are being strategically controlled through emerging knowledge and application of intellect. Truly, ideas rule the world.

STOCKFISH: Simple trading rules.

Nigeria
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fish can turn to meat with patience and processing depending on the stock!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STOCKFISH

The patient woman’s fish
Buy … hold… then sell as meat.

Don’t mind those scary jargons:
Verification, suspension precipitate IPO
Dematerialization, mandate or PO
They all mean “food processing”
Better still “stockbroker’s headache”.

Buy low … sell high …
That’s alone would break you even.
Always remember
Every kobo counts every casual second
In stockfish business!
